Hermann Vogel (1854-1921)
He was born on 16. October 1854 in Plauen as the son of a head of building operations. He began to study science of the law in Leipzig, but changed to the art academy in dresden 1874 influenced by the german writer Joseph Victor von Scheffel. However, he already stopped studying there in the year 1875 but he stayed loosely connected to the academy by the Kompositionsverein "Mappe". After the death of his father he moved into the house in Plauen and worked there as an illustrator since 1878. His talent and his powers of observation turned him into one of the important and great romantic drawer.
Illustrations of Hermann Vogel appeared in the "Auserwählten Märchen von Hans Christian Andersen" 1881, in the Volksmärchen der Deutschen von Musäus, and in the Nibelungen by Gustav Schalk 1891. In addition, the Hermann Vogel-Album two volumes were published 1896 - 1899. Volume 3 with pictures and stories and volume 4 with old and new things from Hermann Vogel appeared 1903 and 1908.
Er wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Plauen als Sohn eines Baumeisters geboren. Er begann in Leipzig Rechtswissenschaft zu studieren, wechselte aber bereits 1874 durch den Schriftsteller Joseph Victor von Scheffel bestärkt an die Dresdner Kunstakademie. Dort brach er sein Studium allerdings bereits 1875 ab und blieb der Akademie in späteren Jahren nur lose durch den Kompositionsverein "Mappe" verbunden. Nach dem Tod des Vaters zog er in dessen Plauener Haus und wirkte dort ab 1878 als Illustrator. Sein Talent und seine Beobachtungsgabe ließen ihn autodidaktisch zu einem der bedeutendsten spätromantischen Zeichner werden.
Illustrationen von Hermann Vogel erschienen unter anderem 1881 in den Auserwählten Märchen von Hans Christian Andersen, 1887 in den Volksmärchen der Deutschen von Musäus und 1891 in "Die Nibelungen" von Gustav Schalk. Zudem erschien 1896 bis 1899 das Hermann Vogel-Album in zunächst zwei Bänden. Band 3 (Bilder- und Geschichtenbuch) und Band 4 (Altes und Neues von Hermann Vogel) erschienen 1903 und 1908.
